The Shard stretches into London’s skyline from its position on the South Bank of the river. The Renzo Piano-designed skyscraper is currently the tallest building in Western Europe. The construction of the building began in March of 2009 and it was completed in Spring of 2012 – ready for London’s much anticipated summer of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and the popular Olympic Games. It is 80% owned by the Qatari investment group and will be host to a large complex of office space, shopping units and luxury apartments.
The Shard marks a new era for the city – one in which London dependents on investment from overseas development in order to maintain its competitive edge. However, as of 2012 there are no confirmed occupants for the building.
