What college classes are students taking these days? There are a lot of new and cool classes at U.S. colleges updated with trending content like social networks, social media, viral videos and the digital area in general. Whether you want to pursue a master of public administration or finish your teaching certification, these classes are recommended to anyone who is going to school.
Check out these tech, social media and digital classes available:
1. Social Media and Virtual Communities is a class available at Emory Goizueta Business School.
“Topics covered will include social networking and how the business world leverages them, virtual worlds and technologies, skills in designing and implementing social media for business value using sharepoint and iTunes U (hands on projects).”
“What can YouTube teach us and is this how, what and all we’d like to learn? Over its hundred year history, radical media theorists have looked with utopian zeal to a moment in the media future which turns out to be upon us: a time where access to the production and distribution of media is democratically available outside channels organized by capital. So why is the technology being used primarily to spoof mainstream media forms and what does this tell us about the media, our society and political possibility?”
“I. Is time travel possible? Could you go back and kill your ancestor? What is time?
II. What is the relation between your mind and your brain—are they separate items or identical? Can persons survive death? Could a machine someday think? Is Data a person?
III. What is a person? Must you have the same body to be you? Same memories? When do we have one person, and when do we have two (think of the episodes where people “split” or “fuse”).
IV. Do you have free will, or are you determined by the laws of nature to do exactly what you wind up doing (while believing you have free will)? Or both? What is freewill? “
4. The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University offers a class called “Human-Robot Interaction.” The description in the course book says:
“This course focuses on the emerging field of human-robot interaction, bringing together research and application of methodology from robotics, human factors, human-computer interaction, interaction design, cognitive psychology, education and other fields to enable robots to have more natural and more rewarding interactions with humans throughout their spheres of functioning. This course is a combination of state-of-art reading and discussions, focused team exercises and problem-solving sessions in human-robot interaction, and a special team project resulting in the implementation of a human-robot interaction system.”
The Institute also offers a class called, “Robot Ethics,” which could also be called, “Don’t make an evil robot.”
5. Learn about GPS at MIT in the course titled, “GPS: Where are you?”
“The use of Global Positioning System (GPS) in a wide variety of applications has exploded in the last few years. In this seminar we explore how positions on the Earth were determined before GPS; how GPS itself works and the range of applications in which GPS is now a critical element.”
If you don’t have time to go to a local college, keep in mind that most of all thisstuff is available on YouTube.
