Hundreds of People Affected by a Meteorite in Russia (VIDEO)

Approximately 450 people were affected by the explosion of a meteorite in Russia earlier today and no person has been killed. This was caused by a military airplane that launched a missile to destroys the meteorite at over 30,000 feet altitude and the result was seen by thousands of people, as parts of the meteorite were crashing to Earth. Also the explosion caused a sonic boom, which damaged building and destroyed all the nearby windows.

The incident happened at 12:20 a.m. ET, in Chelyabinsk, Ural Mountains, central Russia, located 950 miles east of Moscow. Experts mentioned that such impacts happens between five and ten times every year, although at a much smaller scale.

People reported a powerful bright light just seconds before the impact and a loud noise. One of the residents said “I felt like I was blinded by headlights”.

At a local Zinc Plant a wall was destroyed, but there is no environmental threat, its spokeswoman said.

According to Russia’s Academy of Sciences, the meteorite weighed 10 tons and it was traveling at a speed of over 35,000 miles per hour.

The impact interrupted mobile communication for up to two hours in the region.

It is believed that the meteorite in Russia is a part of the asteroid that will pass near Earth tonight, called 2012 DA14, 46 metres in diameter. It could affect weather, TV and communications satellites.
