Commonly known as Valentine’s Day, Saint Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th every year. But the holiday was not about red roses and sweet sugar hearts in the beginning, you can see it in the animated history.
We actually celebrate a tragic event, which gained significance because of Valentinus, an imprisoned man who believed in the idea of free marriage and love. According to the history, Saint Valentine or Valentinus was performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry to Christians women. A legend tells that Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his jailer.
Another legend states that before his execution he wrote “from your Valentine”. In the present, Saint Valentine’s Day is celebrated by the Lutheran Church, the Anglican Communion, the Eastern Orthodox Church.
By the 15th century, this day has transformed into a holiday in which life partners give each other flowers, chocolate and handwritten greeting cards called “valentines”, to expressed their love. Other Valentine’s Day symbols used today are the heart-shaped presents, color red, Cupid. This tradition of giving love cards did not become widespread in the United States until the 1850s. According to the latest surveys, now a quarter of all cards sent each year are valentines.
Before rushing to buy a stuffed teddy bear, chocolate and flowers maybe you should take a moment to understand the real significance of this day.
