Psy’s New Song ‘Gentlemen’ Hits YouTube
Psy, the South Korean pop sensation that took the world by storm via YouTube has just released a new single titled ‘Gentlemen’.
About a year ago Psy was relatively unknown outside of the K-Pop scene but that rapidly changed when he released his first single off of his 6th full-length studio album, ‘Gangnam Style’ July of last year. ‘Gangnam Style’ was a huge international success and had everyone falling in love with this odd little man.
‘Gangnam Style’ was the first video to ever get 1 billion views, even surpassing ‘Baby’ by Justin Bieber. The song has even been mentioned by Ban Ki-Moon, the current secretary general of the UN as a ‘driving source for peace”. Psy has also made various guest appearances on popular TV shows such as Saturday Night Live, The Ellen Show, and even The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
‘Gangnam Style’ is based on the lavish lifestyle found in the Gangnam district of Seoul, South Korea. It consists of a strange man in a yellow suit dancing around, Psy crashing a yoga class, explosions of glittery fire, and no one is really sure what is actually being said in the song except “Hey, Sexy Lady.”
Psy’s new song ‘Gentlemen’ has similar features, even showing the same guy with a yellow suit dancing around, only one decipherable English phrase, weird behaviors, and outlandish actions like pushing ladies off chairs.
Psy is clearly hoping to appeal to his newfound American audience and westerners seem to find it hard to resist his infection hook and overwhelming swagger.
With tensions still high in North Korea, ‘Gentlemen’ is doing more than entertaining the masses, but it is reminding us all that there are more things than threats to come out of the Korean Peninsula. Will Psy continue his reign as an international figurehead or will he start melting into obscurity?
