Lately, Gay Pride in SF has been overshadowed by the controversial decision to name Bradley Manning as a Grand Marshall. Later rescinded and repudiated by the Pride board. But according to a source, who spoke to this reporter from Gizmorati on the condition of anonymity, the choice was motivated by a desire to play politics.
The source, a member of the Pride Committee, spilled the beans over a Rum and Diet, and Vodka 7 at a Castro bar. Apparently, a member of the Board, a former President at that, put forward Manning’s name to only one list of past Community Marshalls, including no Celebrity Marshalls, only obtained 15 votes out of a pool of the electorate, then went forward with the decision to the local gay press, Manning’s people, and of course, Ellsberg got involved. Showing up, along with protesters in front of SF Prides offices along mid-Market, to demand that Manning be reinstated. Even though he had not been correctly voted on to begin with.
The push to ram Manning through, ahead of the SF Pride Brass, was out of “misogynist” tendencies on the part of a certain Radical Faerie towards the SF Pride Chair, Lisa Williams. While the claim is unsubstantiated, the Radical Faerie’s have long stood for rebellion against a heteronormative, patriarchal culture.
From their site, “We are a tribe of queer, non-gendered, nongender specific, bois, inbetweeens, and grrrls who practice radical spirituality, and radical politics.”
According to their own rule book, SF Pride members are to vote by April 20th. At the protest for Bradley Manning in front of SF Prides offices, Joey Cain, former Board President said this, “Whether or not you believe he is a traitor or hero, San Francisco Pride has always been about embracing the diversity of genders, colors and opinions that are in the LGBT community. We have always done that.”
Now the community is talking. With traditional gay media outlets in San Francisco taking editorial slants.
