Gamespy shutting down their servers

by on April 4, 2014

Gamespy announced today on their website that they were to shut down all game servers.

Gamespy was once a cornerstone of many online PC multiplayer games, I think everyone that started PC gaming before steam became a household name has their own Gamespy account.

Their website says:

Effective May 31, 2014, GameSpy will cease providing all hosted services for all games still using GameSpy.
If you have any questions about how this impacts your favourite title please contact the game’s publisher for more information. Thanks for a great ride!

This is going to affect many games including some very recent ones still even as developers moved away from Gamespy and implemented Steamworks instead. Some of these include Mortal Kombat 9 and probably more heartbreaking to many, Halo.

Whilst I think many would agree that Gamespy was an awful thing, it’ll now probably be left to fans of these games to try and keep the online communities running and alive. Which whilst is a wonderful thing us PC gamers can do when a company decides to leave its customers high and dry but is something that we shouldn’t have to do, such is the life of a PC gamer…

Thankfully from now on at least all games can have at least something reliable and actually good like Steamworks. I think the last game that I played that needed Gamespy was Dawn of War, I don’t actually think I have played a game online with Gamespy but anyway no love lost I guess let’s just hope the games affected get fixed as soon as possible.
